NEi Software at AUVSI 2008 in San Diego, CA
| |
The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Unmanned Systems North America is the world's largest unmanned systems conference, with 4,600 attending the San Diego, CA June 10-12, 2008 show.
At the NEi Software booth, Wil Weisenburg and Mitch Muncy demonstrated NEi Software's FEA engineering stress analysis tools including NEi Nastran integrated with Femap (Siemens PLM), NEi Fusion and NEi Works. The latest virtual test technology from NEi includes automated impact analysis (AIA), which is used for impact scenarios from military projectiles to drop testing of electronics (cell phones, laptops). Another recent NEi innovation popular with UAV engineers is our composite material modeling and progressive ply failure analysis (PPFA), which provides insight into composite damage mechanisms so engineers can get the maximum benefit from this class of material. Composites are a frequent material choice in unmanned systems because of their performance characteristics like high strength to weight ratio and stealth. Plus, automated surface contact generation (ASCG) makes realistic simulation of contact in assemblies practical and affordable because it saves time. Last, design optimization finds solutions to problems that have competing parameters — for example, structures that must be both strong and light. |

Composites: NEi Software's PPFA™ Progressive Ply Failure Analysis

Just Drop It! With NEi Nastran's built-in Automated Impact Analysis, product development engineers can gain great detailed insight into the dynamic implicit nonlinear behavior of
real world impact problems and product drop testing. By exploring the effects of design
changes, you can improve design quality, optimize the structural performance of products and assure they
meet safety, regulatory, warranty and customer satisfaction
requirements.
Many consumer products with highly compressed design cycles,
such as consumer electronic products, can realize faster time
to market because impact analysis allows upfront validating of concepts early in
the design cycle, reducing the number of prototypes required,
eliminating the amount of physical testing that must be done, and
avoiding time consuming redesigns.
For virtual drop testing, NEi Nastran AIA calculates
the distance the object will travel up to the point where contact is
made, automatically repositioning the projectile.
NEi Nastran AIA then gives you Automatic Surface Contact Generation by automatically finding
contacting mesh surfaces and creating contact between the two
bodies.
Vibration Characteristics, the natural frequencies of both the
dropped object and the target, are assessed at the point where they
are just in contact, and the dominant frequencies are identified.
Both the impact duration and
the time step can be assessed from the characteristic mode being
excited in the impact.
The user defines the starting position of the projectile or drop
object, the initial velocity, and the acceleration. |

NEi Nastran Case Studies |
|
|
Accommodative Intraocular Eye Implant
Imagine an 80 year old patient having better eyesight than
when they were 25!
-
NuLens Ltd. has developed a prosthetic adjustable lens replacement using NEi Nastran FEA Software.
-
Force and displacement were determined using NEi Nastran's unique advanced nonlinear analysis capabilities, including surface contact with large strain
hyperelastic materials that can handle large displacement scenarios. |
|
Propulsive Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
A revolutionary unmanned
aircraft platform, the Propulsive Wing design utilizes partially embedded crossflow
fans for thrust and flow control instead of the conventional
propeller!
-
Surface modeling techniques in
NEi Nastran were essential to investigate the effect of various carbon-fiber composite
laminate schedules on the distribution of stresses in the airframe.
Analysis showed large stress concentrations, determined material thickness and accelerated development of final
construction techniques. |
