Presentation:
Virtual Testing of Composite Structures Subjected to Blast Loading with Micromechanics Based Damage Degradation

Bart McPheeters

Abstract
To take full advantage of designing with composite structures, the constituent-driven composite damage mechanism from design-dictating load scenarios should be fully analyzed. As the predictive failure model for Progressive Ply Failure Analysis within the NEi Explicit finite element software, MultiContinuum Theory (MCT) is used to explore nonlinear composite damage and failure evolution of composite panels subjected to severe blast loading. With the MCT method, failure in the composite lamina is calculated by evaluating the stress state in either the fiber or matrix, rather than the homogenized composite lamina, allowing one to capture interactions between the two.
